The Ouessant (pronounced Wuh-sahn), also known as the Breton Dwarf sheep, is a rare heritage breed originating from the island of Ouessant off the west coast of Brittany, France. Renowned for being the smallest naturally occurring sheep breed in the world, these hardy, primitive animals are now popular in Europe and beyond as friendly companions, high-quality wool producers, and ecological "lawn mowers".
Physical Characteristics
- Size: They are exceptionally small, with adults standing around 40–50 cm (roughly 16–20 inches) tall at the shoulder.
- Weight: Mature Ouessant sheep typically weigh between 10 kg and 20 kg.
- Appearance: They are stout, robust, and have naturally short tails that do not require docking.
- Horns: Rams possess large, impressive spiral horns, while ewes are generally polled (hornless).
- Color: The breed comes in black, white, brown (moorit), and sometimes grey, with black being historically dominant.
